WMC Day 1: touching down
No one ever said that attending WMC was particularly easy. Some contend that WMC actually stands for Winter Music Cluster… well, you get the picture. Case in point: Team Flavorpill arrives Tuesday night, hoping to jump in with both feet, only to learn that the condo we're to be sharing with our pals from the Ghostly International label has turned into a cond-no. After a night in the swanky airport Holiday Inn, we spend much of Wednesday looking for new digs. The good news: there's a condo available. The bad news: the rental agent keeps pushing back our meeting, hour after hour. So then, how to keep busy?
We hit the Marlin to catch J-Boogie performing at NextAid's party and snag some free wi-fi; sitting outside, the steady thump of house beats is suddenly drowned out by an enormous rushing sound, and the unmistakable smell of rotten eggs fills the air. The construction crew next door has hit a gas main, and they've abandoned their Caterpillar and are fleeing the site, covering their faces. Within minutes a crowd is streaming out of the Marlin, grimacing, and firemen are on the scene. "We've got to clear this whole block," someone says. Team Flavorpill flips their laptops shut and joins the exodus.
There's never a boring moment at WMC.
Fortunately, we're now esconced in our new condo and things have taken a turn for the better. Check back in a bit for our first on-the-scene interviews and recaps of our first night of parties. And whatever you do, watch where you dig!
