MARS 1
Mars 1 explores the possibility of otherworldly existences with alien-like characters that float passively through highly developed, multilayered backgrounds. The artist deliberately leaves the viewer guessing: "You can tell that there's some kind of consciousness driving the creatures, but you can't really pinpoint anything about their motives or purposes," he says.
Mars 1 (aka Mario Martinez) lives and works in San Francisco with his wife, fellow artist Mikas. He began his career as a graffiti artist at the age of 13, moving on to airbrushing, and eventually painting on canvas at 20. Since then, his work has expanded to include sculpture, books, skateboard decks, and designer toys.
