2005 is a year of new beginnings for Flavorpill, with newly designed mailers that boast an increased cover size — providing a larger platform in which to display our cover artwork. Continuing in our tradition of successfully merging technology and art, we've released the first four issues of the new mailers with a uniquely curated art project. We reached out to a select and diverse group of artists to interpret the theme of "Rebirth". Click to see the Rebirth gallery.

JAY BROCKMAN
The Butterfly Project, 2005, Mixed media. 11"x14"

Jay Brockman originally conceived of this project in 1996 while living in Manhattan. He wanted to make art from scrap paper that would normally be discarded. After a few different prototypes were created, he decided on the butterfly as his icon. Butterflies would replace junk mail, old calling cards, receipts, packaging flyers, etc.

Originally they were to be pasted on a wall, but just as art and life mirror each other, the butterfly project was put on hold and inadvertently entered a cocoon-like phase. This year the butterfly emerges from the dusty cocoon. Created with paper dating back to the original idea as well as current pieces of paper, the butterfly project finds an appropriate introduction to the world, 9 years later.
