Issue #231: Cover Design Credit

JOHN HENDRIX

John Hendrix has been drawing since shortly after he was born in St. Louis. After years of wasting money on comic books, Hendrix discovered that one might be able to draw pictures for a living. The fledgling artist attended the University of Kansas to study graphic design and illustration. He then moved to New York City, where he attended the School of Visual Arts in the graduate "Illustration as Visual Essay" program. Hendrix graduated in May 2003 with honors and debt. During his time illustrating in New York, he also taught at Parsons School of Design and worked at the New York Times as Assistant Art Director of the op-ed page for several years.

Hendrix's work has appeared in such publications as Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone, the New Yorker, Esquire, the New York Times, and Christianity Today, among many others. He has also drawn book jackets for Random House, Harper Collins, Greenwillow Books, and St. Martin's Press. Despite his refusal to make legitimate "Art," Hendrix's drawings have won numerous awards, including the distinguished Society of Illustrator's Silver Medal for Book Illustration in 2006. Many of his drawings have also appeared in the highly esteemed annual award publications American Illustration, Society of Illustrators, and Society for Publication Design and Communication Arts. Hendrix was recently featured in Taschen's published survey of the top 150 contemporary illustrators in the world, Illustration Now!, in stores nationwide. In addition to his editorial drawings, he is teaching undergraduate illustration at Washington University in St. Louis, working on several picture books for children, trying to start an apiary, and changing diapers. He lives in St. Louis, Missouri with his wife Andrea and son Jackson.
