SF #279: Cover Design Credit
Artwork by RICHARD COLMAN
The terracotta-brick homes in Richard Colman's paintings look a bit like those of his Bethesda, Maryland, childhood. But the similarity is only structural; presumably, there wasn't nearly as much sodomy and decapitation in his real home. Colman spent much of his teenage years venturing into DC to explore, paint graffiti, and attend hardcore shows. In art school, Colman wasn't thinking much about making a living from gallery shows — neither does he now, really. But his former graffiti partners championed his work and pushed him to produce new pieces for exhibitions they were organizing. With an eye toward hieroglyphics and Byzantine painting, he began refining his characters and focusing on narrative possibilities — and now he has his own studio, where he experiments with new sizes and media.
Colman's solo show, The Ghost, opens Saturday, September 8 (7-11pm) at White Walls — and is featured in this week's issue of Flavorpill.
