SF #278: Cover Design Credit
Artwork by LIZ HICKOK
Liz Hickok's current series, San Francisco in Jell-O®, consists of photographs and videos depicting SF's landscapes cast in Bill Cosby's fave gelatinous product. Hickok painstakingly fabricated scale models of some of the city's architectural elements, such as the Transamerica Pyramid and the Palace of Fine Arts, using balsa wood and foam core to make molds. Like a movie set (but jiggly), the videos show tiny Telegraph Hill shaking in an earthquake and the mini Marina District washing away in a tidal wave. Leaving no detail untouched, Hickok hand-painted mountainous backdrops, set up dry ice to simulate fog, and lit each scene dramatically. While the translucent beauty of these works is what first attracts the viewer, their fragility quickly becomes a metaphor for the transitory nature of human artifacts.
Hickok is part of the Strange Weather exhibition at David Cunningham Projects opening Saturday, September 1 at 6pm — and is featured in this week's issue of Flavorpill.
