YUMIKO KAYUKAWA
Growing up in a small town on the isolated northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, the panoramic beauty inspired in Yumiko Kayukawa a special communion with nature. She found animal life and insects fascinating. Firmly grounded in the natural world, her teen and post-teen years were steeped in American pop culture. It wasn't until a trip to the US at age 27 that she began to see the visually rich attraction of Japan. Kayukawa's work incorporates these many influences in a spell-binding mix of manga (Japanese comic books), mysteriously elusive girls, rock 'n roll, and a host of creatures big and small. Her paintings reflect how life titillates and distracts, while the natural world quietly serves as our true underlying life source.
