JESPER JUST
Born in Denmark in 1974, Jesper Just studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 2003. Working primarily with video, Just centers his themes on male gender roles and cross-generational relationships between men, as well as themes of power, redemption, and seduction. Strongly inspired by film as a medium, his works make use of an aesthetic, dramaturgic, and narrative language that resembles major Hollywood productions, making use of filmic clichés, while at the same time consciously critiquing them. Just debuted in New York in 2004 with a critically acclaimed one-man show at Perry Rubenstein Gallery in Chelsea. He has also shown internationally, and his films are included in major collections including the Tate Modern in London, and private collections in the US and Canada.
PERFORMA has commissioned Jesper Just to create his first live multimedia performance, True Love Is Yet To Come, for PERFORMA05, New York's first biennial of performance art. Its final performance is on Tue 11.8 (8pm). An installation of three short videos by Just continues at Perry Rubinstein Gallery through Thur 12.1.
This week's flavorpill NYC cover is a PERFORMA commission, produced in association with Vision3, and made possible with generous support from the Danish Arts Council, Stephan Weiss Studio, and Perry Rubenstein Gallery.
