Issue #269: Cover Design Credit

SWOON & TOD SEELIE

SWOON is an artist living and working in Brooklyn. She studied fine art at the Pratt Institute, and has been obsessed with the paintbrush since the age of ten. SWOON's worlds are populated by realistically rendered and evocatively cut-out street people — often the artist's friends and family. Riding bikes, talking on a stoop, going grocery shopping — these people traverse a cityscape of SWOON's own invention. Inspired by both historical and folk-art sources ranging from German expressionist wood-block prints to Indonesian shadow puppets, SWOON is a master of cut paper, playing with positive and negative space in a conceptually driven exploration of the street experience.

This SWOON exhibit, running now through Sat 8.13 at New York's Deitch Gallery (76 Grand St, 212.343.7300), was photographed by friend and fellow artist Tod Seelie.

Tod Seelie was raised in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from the Pratt Institute in 2002 with a degree in photography; he also studied at the Victorian College of Art in Melbourne, and the Chautauqua School of Art. Tod has exhibited in New York and Berlin, and his work has appeared in such publications as Vice, Jane, i-D, and Fader, gracing several book and album covers as well. He continues to work and collaborate with other artists in Brooklyn, where he resides.
