SOVIET SPACE ART COURTESY OF START MOBILE

On July 15, 1975, the United States and the Soviet Union launched the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first international space mission. Courtesy of START MOBILE, this Flavorpill cover series commemmorates the mission's 31st anniversary. This collection of "Soviet space propaganda," which has never been exhibited publicly, represents some five decades of Russian constructivism, dating back to the 1950s.

"These posters were stored for decades in the archives of the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow, virtually unseen until our team digitized them last month," according to START MOBILE founder John Doffing. "I firmly believe that the mobile medium represents a historically unprecedented new platform for the exhibition of art."

"An art form as vital as painting, graphic design was a central preoccupation of Russian constructivism," according to art critic and conceptual artist Jonathon Keats. "These remarkable posters come out of that tradition, and powerfully illustrate why the constructivists were right to reject hierarchies in art and to create work that could communicate beyond the walls of the museum. By making these graphics available to anyone with a cell phone, START MOBILE admirably brings the constructivist project into the 21st century."
