The F-List

Fashion Designers

The emerging fashion talents who made our shortlist are as diverse as the cities they hail from. Each one of these designers fills a gap in the industry and some — in the case of Isabela Capeto from Brazil and Tsumori Chisato from Japan — already have well-established companies with their own retail stores. World domination is next. -Jason Campbell

Jonathan Saunders

Fierce local competition notwithstanding, Jonathan Saunders is London's next rising star. For s/s 2006, Saunders played with the concept of crossover seasons, successfully manipulating light fabrics with cold, metallic prints in gold, silver, and blue. With signature looks in polychromatic prints and his skill for working slim and voluminous silhouettes together, Saunders has created a desirable blend that's winning him quite a reputation. -Njide Ugboma

Guillaume Hinfray

With their sixth collection under the Guillaume Hinfray name, Marco Censi and Guillaume Hinfray are commanding considerable attention in fashion circles. Their use of buckles, studs, embroidery, ribbons, velvet, and distressed leather makes for covetable footwear with an unexpected beauty and a one-of-a-kind couture feeling. Look out for the 2006 launch of their men's collection under Censi's name. -Karina Jeffrey

Rachel Comey

Holding a sculpture degree from the University of Vermont, Rachel Comey also boasts an eponymous label (for men and women) that is both quirky and artistic: a bit sporty, a touch country, and grounded in a retro sophistication. For s/s 2006, Comey took a hallucinogenic journey through the '80s with stomata-like prints and a black and yellow palette, while still maintaining a whiff of classic American sportswear — a category she's sure to burn up in coming seasons. - Michael Cohen

Isabela Capeto

designers_capeto.jpg
Combining the design spirits of Belgium's Dries Van Noten and Australia's Easton Pearson, Brazilian designer Isabela Capeto mixes luxe handcrafted pieces and cute stitchwork to create clothes with a chic bohemian flair. With looks that take their wide-ranging design cues everywhere from Henri Matisse to her own six-year-old-daughter's wardrobe, Capeto is the freshest new talent on the fashion scene. -Flavia Mendonça and Eleonora Alves

Tsumori Chisato

designers_chisato.jpg
Issey Miyake-trained designer Tsumori Chisato's girly, playfully hued, and print-heavy collections have had in-the-know style swans clamoring for her pieces since 1990, but only recently did the Tokyo- and Paris-based designer's work start to take hold in the West. Chisato is set to break out from her cult status any time now; can you say "Japanese Marc Jacobs"? -Meghan Cleary
